Date: Sept. 30, 2018

Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10

Intro: Today we will conclude our sermon series entitled, “But God.”  I hope that you have enjoyed seeing the different ways in which stepped in and made a difference. Today will be no different we will once again see God step in and make a difference. Our Scripture for today comes from Ephesians 2 verses 1 – 10,

Our sermon for today is called, “Are you REALLY alive?”

* Read

  • Paul in verse 1 literally says that people are The Walking Dead! (Not the TV show!)
    • Were Dead in your trespasses and sins
    • Formerly walked – This seems to me like an oxymoron. How can a dead person walk?
      • People can be physically alive, emotionally alive, intellectually alive but still be DEAD spiritually!
    • A WALKING DEAD person is someone who lives their life with no desire to pursue God or even devote any time to Him.

  • The WALKING DEAD:
    • Live life according to the course of this world
      • Wicked, Greedy, Evil, Envious, Hateful, Murderers, Strife, Deceiving, Gossips, Violent, Untrustworthy, Unloving, Sexually Perverted, Selfish, Lustful, Disregards Authority, etc.

  • Follow the guidance of Satan
    • Described here by Paul as the “Prince of the power of the air.”
      • This title speaks to Satan’s authority and environment

  • Known as sons of disobedience
    • Those who are obstinate (firmly or stubbornly adhering to one’s purpose, opinion, etc.; not yielding to argument, persuasion, or entreaty.) and rebellious

  • Live in the lusts of their flesh
    • Whatever our flesh desired we went after it. We indulged the determination of our flesh.
    • Whatever our mind desired we sought it.

  • Are children of wrath
    • Those who deserve to be punished.
      • Specifically by the righteous wrath of God

  • God doesn’t desire for people to be dead. God desires for people to be a LIVING SACRIFICE

But God:

  • Made us ALIVE
    • Do you grasp what the Scripture is trying to say?
      • You at one point in your life were THE WALKING DEAD. You were physically alive, you were emotionally alive and you were intellectually alive BUT you were DEAD spiritually. And because you were dead spiritually you had NO HOPE, NO FUTURE, and NO PEACE.
    • BUT GOD – MADE YOU ALIVE with CHRIST!
      • God connected your life to the life of CHRIST
      • Literally means to make one alive together (placed in a union for survival)
  • Meaning we are alive spiritually because of Jesus!
  • We must be attached to Jesus in order to have spiritual life
  • Without Jesus we have no spiritual life
  • We are ALIVE because Jesus died and rose again!

  • Raised us up with Jesus
    • At the surface this seems to make no sense. If I have been made alive then why do I need raised up?
      • In order for you to be made ALIVE you had to die first!
  • Colossians 3:1-3 – Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
    • We must die to self!

  • Romans 6:3-4 – Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
    • Only when we die to self and accept the gift of salvation which is through Jesus can we be MADE ALIVE!
    • Because we are MADE ALIVE we can WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE.

  • Seated us with Jesus
    • This idea takes us into the heavenly realm.
    • It means that we have a right to the kingdom of God
      • Because of Jesus
  • It means we can eagerly looked forward to this wonderful time
      • Because of Jesus
  • It means we can be filled with joy and happiness because our future is secure
      • Because of  Jesus.
  • It means one day we will spend our eternity with Jesus in heaven!
      • Isaiah 65:17-18 – “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; For behold, I create Jerusalem for rejoicing And her people for gladness.”

Why did God step in and make us alive?

  • His rich mercy = Abounding in Compassion
    • God’s COMPASSION is greater than our past
    • God’s ABOUNDING COMPASSION lead Him to show forth His love

  • His great love that He has for us
    • God loved us even when we were dead in our transgressions and sins
    • God loved us even though we were rebelling and failing

Final Thoughts: (Don’t Worry the are short and simple!)

  1. Without Jesus you aren’t fully ALIVE.
  2. With Jesus you are FULLY ALIVE
  3. Being made alive had nothing to do with you
    1. It was by God’s grace – Favor
    2. Read verses 8 – 10 – For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Closing: Are you really alive or are you the walking dead?
