Main Points:

  1. Satan’s Tactics – vv. 1-5
    1. Isolation
      1. He went after Eve when she was alone and not near Adam

  1. Changed God’s Word
    1. Did God really say, “You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?”
    2. He was checking to see how much Eve knew about the command that God had given to Adam.
      1. “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
    3. Notice that Satan attempted to make God look:
      1. Uncaring and unloving – You can’t eat any fruit from these trees!?!?!?

  1. Challenged God’s Word
    1. “You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
      1. Satan challenged the result of disobedience – DEATH
        1. The idea of death was not just a physical death but also a spiritual one (broken relationship with God)

  1. Satan challenged God’s motive
    1. God knows that your eyes will be opened
    2. Satan was making God look as though He was hiding something from Adam and Eve
      1. The ability to be like HIM

  1. Eve’s Response (v.6)
    1. She LOOKED
      1. Eve SAW that the tree was good for food
      2. Her flesh was winning

  1. She LUSTED
    1. It was a delight (charming; lustful) to the eyes – The lust of her eyes
    2. It was desirable (covet; greatly beloved) to make one wise – The pride of life

  1. She LEAPT
    1. She took the fruit and ate
    2. She fulfilled the desire of her own fleshly desire
      1. James 1:15 – Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

  1. She GAVE
    1. Eve gave the fruit to Adam and he ate it as well

  1. Don’t get stuck on Isolation Island
    1. Eve got caught on Isolation Island
      1. She was far enough away from Adam that he couldn’t be of any help
        1. The idea of with = Be close but not necessarily right next to
    2. When we are isolated it is easier for us to be defeated
      1. 1 Peter 5:8 – Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
    3. Don’t isolate yourself from:
      1. Your family
      2. Your church family
      3. God
    4. Don’t try to fight/argue with Satan on your own
      1. James 4:7-8a – Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
      2. Run and get some help
        1. Ex. Joseph

  1. We must go beyond knowing God’s Word
    1. Don’t get me wrong we should know God’s Word but we must go beyond that.
    2. Eve knew God’s Word but she didn’t apply God’s Word to her life.
      1. What happened when she didn’t apply God’s Word?
        1. She was deceived!
    3. We need to as believer’s apply God’s Word to our lives.
      1. It is great that we know the true historical account of the Fall but we need to apply this to our lives
      2. James 1:22 – But prove yourselves doers (appliers) of the word, and not merely hearers (knowers) who delude themselves.
      3. We must go beyond just hearing and knowing God’s word and we need to do and apply.
    4. Examples:
      1. It is one thing for Ed to know the tax code but quite another in applying the tax code. What if Ed didn’t apply all he knew about tax when filling out taxes for other people? He might not have many customers
      2. Shane, Jim and Doug drive semi’s for a living and they know how they work and function. What would happen if they didn’t apply their knowledge by getting in and driving? They wouldn’t get paid!
      3. The same thing happens to us spiritually we can know a whole lot but until we apply it what good does it do? I have talked with many people who know much about the Scriptures but they don’t apply it. Often time their life is a hot mess! They quote Scripture to me and know how to fix the issue but they don’t! Why? They aren’t applying or doing it!
    5. We must go beyond knowing God’s Word

  1. Satan does not want you to have a proper relationship with God
    1. Satan is a liar and a murderer and he has no desire whatsoever for any person to have a proper relationship with God.
    2. He will question God’s Word in order to make you second guess it.
    3. He will boldly claim that it isn’t right in order for you to doubt it.
    4. We will give his thoughts on the situation. A lie mixed with just a little truth to make it look good.
    5. Don’t buy any of it even for one second! After he has done all of this he will stand back and watch as you fall into sin and damage your relationship with God.

  1. Our sin has an impact on others
    1. What did Eve do after she ate the fruit?
      1. Did she feel bad about what she had done and say sorry to God?
      2. Did she run over to Adam and let him know she had a mistake and to stay away from that tree?
      3. She gave the fruit to Adam and he ate it as well.
    1. Eve’s sin had an impact on Adam
    2. The choices we make carry consequences with them both good and bad
      1. How we respond to stressful situations – Rage monster or calm
      2. How we talk to our spouse during deep discussions – Anger and hate or love
      3. How we react when our children make a mistake – Yelling or firm understanding
    1. Families have been broken apart because of the sin:
      1. Adultery; Drunkenness; Greed; Pornography; Hate; Anger; etc.
    1. Our sin doesn’t just impact us, which it does, it also impacts those around us

Closing: Since the very beginning Satan has been deceiving people and getting them to fall into temptation. Satan has been telling mankind that just one bite won’t hurt! That’s a lie! One small bite of sin causes problems. Don’t fall for his tricks. Don’t allow yourself to get isolated. Go beyond knowing God’s Word, apply it! Believe that Satan has no desire for you to have a proper relationship with God. Realize that your sin impacts others. If you are going to take just one small bite, don’t let it be of sin let be of God’s Word.

Psalm 34:8 – O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed in the man who take refuge in Him!
