Reverence or Fear?

Proverbs 1:7 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

What does it mean to fear the Lord? Does it mean that I am to be scared of God? I mean who wouldn’t be scared of God, He can do great a wonderful things! He created the world, the stars, and galaxies out of NOTHING. This is the God that rained fire from heaven and destroyed wicked cities! This is the God that has the power to overcome death! But the fear that is described here is not one of being scared but rather of having a reverence for God. We should respect God and give Him praise! Why? Because He can do great and wonderful things. When we give the proper respect to God then we start to gain knowledge. Not a worldly knowledge but a spiritual knowledge! I believe the first way that a person shows proper respect for God is by accepting His Son Jesus as your personal Savior. Once you do that then you start to gain that spiritual knowledge. After salvation we show God respect by reading His word, praying, obeying His word, and showing the love of Christ in our lives.

Those of us who show a proper respect to God have no need to be afraid of God because He is our heavenly Father. But for those who will despise God’s wisdom and instruction they should be afraid. They should be afraid because if they reject Jesus they reject the opportunity to make heaven their home. So, when they die they will not be in heaven with God they will instead be separated from God in the eternal torments of hell.

What kind of fear do have today? A proper reverence for God or are you scared?

Broken Down

Proverbs 25:28 – He that hath no rule over is own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

How important is it for us to control our spirit? It is of the utmost importance! People are watching: co-workers, friends, children, spouses, neighbors, and people we see out and about. Everyone is looking and watching our every move, especially if we claim to be a “Christian.” People will examine us closely to see if walk the walk!

Controlling our spirit is how we handle our emotions, thoughts, and reactions to the situations that come up in life. If we don’t control our spirit well, then we are like a city that is destroyed, which makes it useless. An uncontrolled spirit also is like a city without walls, having no protection from the enemy. If we fail to control our emotions, thoughts, and reactions we destroy our testimony for God and we make ourselves an easy target for the enemy.  Remember greater is He (God) that is in us than that dirty dog satan who in the world tempting us! Let’s control our spirit and make our life a well fortified city for God’s Word to dwell and grow!

Being Holy

I Peter 1:16 – Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I AM holy.

What a challenge for us as believers! We are to be holy as our GOD is HOLY! Is this even possible? Can a person be holy? The answer is yes, we can be holy, but not by ourselves. We need help and that help comes from Jesus. For a person to be holy they need to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus is the HOLY ONE, He is the one who came to earth and lived a perfect life. He was sinless! What an awesome Savior, He came and paid our sin debt because of His love for us.

When we have Jesus as our personal Savior we can strive to be holy. Being holy does not mean we are perfect because we will still sin everyday. Holiness means that we strive to live a life that pleases God in every possible way. We can do that by being obedient to His word, filling our minds with Godly thoughts, using our lips to uplift and encourage, and putting away the former life that we used to live. Holiness is a process of us striving to be more like Jesus every day. How about it, will you try to be more like Jesus today?

God’s Snow!

Job 37:6 – “For he (God) saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth;”

What a fitting verse for this past weekend in Nebraska and the entire midwest. Snow was falling like crazy and the winds were blowing with great fierceness! As I watched the snow fall and the wind blow, I thought, “What an awesome God I serve!”

Is it not amazing to know that God directs each snowfall, each flake, each gust of wind? Our God controls the snow that falls on the earth; how much and where it falls! Our God is in control of all things, absolutely amazing!

This past weekend reminded me that even when the weather outside is frightful, God is still in control. He controls the snow, the wind, and the temperature. God is always in control and it is reassuring to those that believe on Him. The next time and big storm hits whether in your life or actual weather, remember that GOD is in control!

Because of the Cross,

Pastor Chris
